The designer has over 3,000 designs in production. To date, Rashid has received over 300 awards for his work. Indeed, some awards, like the Good Design Award, almost seem to be his by right. His creations are included in 20 permanent exhibitions and his art is on display in galleries and museums worldwide. Rashid, a university scholar, also lectures at conferences, travelling around the world in the process.
Rashid designs furniture, fashion and packaging, among other things. His breakthrough as a designer came in the mid 1990s with the Garbo Waste Can, a wastepaper basket he designed for Umbra. His customers include big names like Swarovski, Fauchon and Shiseido. Rashid designed perfume bottles for Issey Miyake, watches for Alessi, lamps for Artemide and T-shirts for Lacoste.
Now, the son of Egyptian-English parents is devoting himself to the theme of windows and solar protection on behalf of Velux, who will be showing their “Design-Rollos by Karim Rashid” collection for the first time at Heimtextil. On 13 January, the master will be there in person to explain his designs.
