Inspiring Design of the 50s and 60s
The Heimtextil goes City initiative will set the stage for new products from Heimtextil in downtown Frankfurt. From 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday 14 January 2012, around 30 specialist retailers, galleries and public institutions will present textiles from all walks of life and cultural fields. Under the motto “MONTAGE – The Roaring 50’s and 60’s (are back)!” handicraft businesses will be inviting you to take a look at last century’s 50’s and 60’s design world.
Livingroom in bright colours
The ROARING 50’s/60’s were a time of pace-setting product developments in the textile sector (film screen printing for fabrics and architectural grillwork), the introduction of modern products from America (metal rail systems, electrical cord controls), a time of colourful, unconventional design (cinema wall coverings and the ubiquitous kidney shape with shrill decorative patterns) and the natural zest for life expressed in the wide variety of products (shag pile carpets and linoleum). Then as now, textile products were brought to life especially by the final finishing processes at the hands of the craftsman and the expert MONTAGE skills of the interior decorator, and thus made their mark in the history of design and interior decoration.
A mix of pattern: Wallpaper and table-cloth
Bygone themes, at the time born partly of a natural necessity, are today experiencing a revival: collections and fabric reprints from the 50’s and 60’s, wallpaper designs that are true to yesterday’s originals, classic stretch-laid carpets and traditional upholstery. Wall covering methods are being rediscovered, just like retro-art, retro-furniture design and fresh, garish bed fashions. Where clothes are involved, there is a return to petticoats and the revival of the fur coat.
Why not come and take a look at creative ideas for decoration, retro-art and the latest trends from the international home textiles sector and pick up some valuable tips for your own home!
